Idea in Progress

Number of Operations Iraq Freedom and Enduring Freedom casualties as confirmed by U.S. Central Command: 2045 (AS of 8-10-05)Note: Unknown if this is only Combat related or includes accidents and other deaths including suicides.
Number of Casualties in American Civil War: (Union Side)
Union battle deaths — 140,414
Union other deaths — 224,097
Total Union deaths — 364,511

Slave Population of America at the time of the Civil war: 4,000,000
"One hundred twenty-five thousand free blacks lived in the South. There were four million slaves in the United States in 1860, ninety percent of who were in the South, owned by 350,000 slaveholders. "

Population of:Iraq: 26,074,906 (July 2005 est.)
Afghanistan: 29,928,987 (July 2005 est.)

Question:

Given that:

Currently 2045 troops have lost their lives to secure the freedom of 55+ Million people in Iraq and Afghanistan.
(26894-1 ratio)

While: 364000+ Union troops lost their lives to secure the freedom of 4+ Million slaves in the American Civil war.
(10.98-1 ratio)

And That:

All the troops that have lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan were volunteers.

While The Union Army in the later years of the Civil War had many Conscripts, drafted unwillingly, while a person could buy out of service by paying $300 or if they could get another to serve for them.

Was The American Civil war an Unjust War compared to the Current War against terror?

The problem I have with the war in Iraq has little to do with compassion.

I thought Iran was a better target.
